Chapter Six · Step 6 of 7

Compassion: Cracking the Code

Finding out if it was ever true

Finding out whether that old belief was ever true.

You've felt the weight of it now. Carried it, out loud, maybe for the first time.

What's next isn't about carrying it differently. It's about finding out if it was ever true.

A woman with her hand on her chest, smiling gently

A small ceremony.

Those coping strategies were necessary at the time. Even if they caused you pain, they were there to protect you from what was unbearable. You wouldn't have survived without them — so we hold them with a lot of compassion, not shame.

The part of you that built the identity, ran the behaviors, carried the cost — she was never your enemy. She did the only thing a child could do, with what she had.

You kept me safe. You kept me loved. You did exactly what you needed to do, and I am only here, now, able to look at any of this, because of you.

Now, a question. Not the version your mind learned to believe. Just — true. Can you know, without a shadow of a doubt, that it is?

Is it true?

There is nothing to solve here yet. Just let the question land.

Walking through your life again, exactly as it happened, except for one thing — this time, without the belief, and without the identity you built around it.

Place one hand somewhere supportive. Let the surface beneath you hold your weight.

Say the belief inwardly. Notice where your body tightens.

Now ask: is it absolutely true? Let one unhurried exhale follow.

Notice whether even one percent more space becomes available.

You are not forcing the old world away. You are discovering that another world exists.

Another world
exists.

Let the first honest thing be enough.

Another world exists.

Now, let's meet who you are, in the absence of it.
